How thick should concrete flatwork be?

Four inches is the standard for walkways, patios, and residential driveways carrying passenger vehicles. Areas that see heavier loads — RV parking, delivery access, commercial drive lanes — are typically poured five to six inches with reinforcement sized for the load. Thickness is decided by what will actually be on the slab, not by square footage.

Why does new concrete have lines cut into it?

Those are control joints, and they're intentional. Concrete shrinks slightly as it cures and that shrinkage has to relieve somewhere. Control joints create a deliberate weak line so the inevitable crack forms below the surface, inside the joint, where you'll never see it. A slab without properly spaced joints will still crack — just wherever it wants to.

Can flatwork be poured over an existing slab?

Sometimes, using a bonded overlay, but only if the existing slab is structurally sound and the added height doesn't create problems at doorways, thresholds, or drainage points. If the slab underneath is cracked, settling, or sitting on a failed base, an overlay just inherits those problems and telegraphs them through within a couple of years.

What's the best time of year to pour in the Bay Area?

Late spring through early fall is the most reliable window. Winter pours are possible but the wet season limits the days when the sub-base is dry enough to compact properly, and saturated ground makes excavation messy. Mid-summer pours need attention to curing since dry heat and afternoon wind pull moisture out of fresh concrete quickly.

What Counts as Concrete Flatwork?

Flatwork is the industry term for any concrete poured horizontally — the surfaces you walk on, park on, and live on.

One Advantage of Pouring Concrete in Northern California

Flatwork in most of the country fails from freeze-thaw damage — water gets into the surface, freezes, expands, and spalls the concrete apart over successive winters.
