Two quotes for the same job can differ by thousands, and it's rarely because one contractor is greedy. It's usually because they're quoting different work. Here's what to check.
A quote you can rely on
- States slab thickness in inches
- Names the mix strength in PSI
- Specifies reinforcement type and spacing
- Says how deep the base is and that it's compacted
- Includes demolition and haul-away as a line
- Covers permits, or says clearly that they're excluded
- Describes the finish and the sealer by name
- Puts the workmanship warranty in writing
A quote to ask questions about
- A single square-foot price with no specification
- No mention of what happens to the old concrete
- Silence on base preparation
- "Wire mesh" with no depth or placement detail
- A verbal number, or one that expires this week
- Large deposit requested before any work starts
