Concrete Services Across Santa Clara County

Santa Clara County stretches from the dense urban core of San Jose down through the agricultural south county to Gilroy, and from the flat valley floor up into the foothills of Los Gatos, Saratoga, and Los Altos Hills. That range means concrete work varies enormously across a relatively small geographic area.

The valley floor is where most of the population and most of the work sits — largely flat, generally workable soils, and a housing stock dominated by postwar tract development now reaching the age where original concrete needs replacing. The foothill communities are a different discipline entirely, where slope, drainage, retaining, and site access shape every project.

The other thread running through the county is age. Neighborhoods built in the 1950s and 60s are now sixty to seventy years old, and the driveways, walkways, and patios poured then were built to lighter standards for lighter vehicles. A large share of our residential work here is renewing that generation of concrete.

A long, reliable pouring season

The county's Mediterranean climate gives a dependable spring-through-autumn construction window. Winter rain is the practical constraint rather than cold — saturated ground, not temperature, is what stops work.

Heat rising as you go south

Palo Alto and Mountain View get real coastal moderation. San Jose runs warmer. Morgan Hill and Gilroy get genuinely hot, which changes how concrete is scheduled and cured through the summer.

Expansive clay in parts of the valley

Sections of the valley floor sit on clay soils that swell in winter and shrink through the dry season. That seasonal movement is a leading cause of cracked slabs that weren't built to accommodate it.

Conditions vary enormously across Santa Clara County, but the response doesn't change in principle: build the layers under the slab properly and design for movement instead of hoping it won't happen.

What happens when a layer gets skipped

    Concrete slab

    3,000–4,000 PSI · 4" home, 6"+ vehicles

    Four inches under a delivery truck cracks, every time. Thickness has to match the heaviest thing that will ever sit on it — not the family car.

    Reinforcement

    #4 rebar at 18" centres, chaired

    Rebar lying on the base does nothing at all. It has to sit in the slab's middle third, where it can hold a crack closed instead of watching one open.

    Vapour barrier

    10-mil sheeting under interior slabs

    Without it, ground moisture wicks up through the concrete. That delaminates coatings, lifts flooring, and leaves a garage or shop slab that never fully dries.

    Aggregate base

    Crushed Class 2 rock, 4–6" in lifts

    Pour straight onto soil and water has nowhere to drain. It collects under the slab, softens the ground, and the support the slab was designed around disappears.

    Compacted subgrade

    Graded to fall, compacted to 90–95%

    Skip the compaction and the slab settles unevenly within a few wet seasons. One side drops, a crack opens across the difference, and no surface repair will hold it.
